last June and the 21st of last July at the back of the Albany and in Saipingsham respectively, accidents resulting in death recurred to Convicts employed in the Chain Gang. Death was caused by the falling of earth in one case, and of a large stone in the other, in consequence of the gang being allowed by their Overseer to undermine the banks where they were working.
"That in each case the Coroner's Jury returned verdicts of accidental death, though prima facie it would appear that the parties who are charged with direction of the Chain Gang labor must in some way be held responsible.
